Seu primeiro disco "Benito Di Paula" de 1971, foi censurado por trazer a música "Apesar de Você" de Chico Buarque.

Seu segundo LP, "Ela" também não trouxe grande êxito. Mas estourou as paradas com o terceiro, "Um Novo Samba", onde já aparecia na capa com sua longa barba e cabelos, inúmeras correntes, brincos, pulseiras, etc. O grande sucesso desse disco foi a música "Retalhos de Cetim".

Teve inúmeros sucessos ao longo de sua carreira como "Charlie Brown", "Vai Ficar Na Saudade", "Se Não For Amor", "Amigo Sol, Amiga Lua", "Mulher Brasileira". Chegou nos anos 70, a disputar a venda de LPs juntamente com Roberto Carlos, tendo composto muitas músicas para este.

Comandou o programa "Brasil Som 75" na TV Tupi em 1975. Tem mais de 25 discos gravados, tendo parte importante de sua obra relançada em CD, devido ao sucesso de suas músicas. Chegou a fazer sucesso em nível internacional também, principalmente na América Latina.

Teve parte de sua história contada no livro "Eu Não Sou Cachorro Não" do historiador, jornalista e escritor baiano Paulo César de Araújo.
